Lacking Motivation? Here’s the Solution

Increasing motivation involves creating the right mindset, setting achievable goals, and fostering habits that keep you inspired and consistent. Having a concrete understanding of your ‘why’ and the purpose behind the endeavor can help to keep you motivated.  Here are a handful of practical strategies to boost motivation:


1. Clarify Your Goals

• Define Your Purpose: If your ‘why’ is well-developed and defined it can empower you to complete even the most mundane tasks, as well as, the most challenging ones.

• Ask yourself why you want to achieve something. A strong “why” drives motivation.

• Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART) Goals:

• Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

• Visualize Success: Create a vision of success that coincides with your goals and values. 

• Picture yourself achieving your goals and the benefits that come with them.


2. Build a Positive Environment

• Eliminate Distractions: First, determine what distractions thwart your productivity, then you can determine how to eliminate them. 

• Create a focused space for working toward your goal.

• Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Determine your personal and professional heros and lean on their experiences and wisdom, 

• Connect with friends, family, or mentors who encourage and inspire you.

• Use Motivation Triggers: These may include your personal ‘why’s’ like providing for family, financial freedom, professional autonomy or a flexible work schedule.  

• Set reminders, affirmations, or visual cues (like vision boards, photos, etc.) in your environment to stay inspired.


3. Take Action Immediately— Just do it!

• Start Small: Take the first step.

• Begin with a simple task to build momentum. Action often precedes motivation and each small win or accomplished task increases motivation.

• Use the “5-Minute Rule”: Small commitment to just begin.

• Commit to working on something for just five minutes. Often, starting leads to continuing.


4. Create a Routine

• Establish Habits: The book Atomic Habits has powerful tips to build habits that lead to personal growth and success.

• Consistency builds discipline and makes tasks feel less daunting.

• Plan Your Day: Be intentional about how you spend your time. 

• Schedule time for high-priority tasks when your energy is highest.


5. Reward Progress

• Celebrate Small Wins:  By utilizing the positive energy from a win to motivate  yourself to engage in another task, you maximize each success. In fact, The best way to celebrate small wins is by doing the next hard thing.

• Acknowledge even minor achievements to boost confidence and motivation.

• Use Rewards Strategically: Make the reward meaningful and motivating.

• Treat yourself after completing a goal or reaching a milestone.


6. Focus on Growth

• Adopt a Growth Mindset: Never stop learning and growing.

• View challenges as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than obstacles.

• Track Progress: The more data you track the more you can fine-tune your efforts to achieve the most success.

• Keep a journal or checklist to reflect on how far you’ve come.


7. Address Obstacles

• Reframe Negative Thoughts: 

• Replace self-doubt with affirmations like, “I can figure this out.”

• Tackle Procrastination: Each day do the hardest task first! Whatever it is that you want to do the least is the thing you should do first.

• Identify and address the root cause, such as fear of failure or lack of clarity. Tackle these issues through journaling, counseling or consulting a trusted mentor.

• Avoid Perfectionism: Attempting perfection on a given task can be a means of avoiding forward progress and momentum, since the pursuit of perfection is impossible thus futile.

• Focus on progress, not perfection.  


8. Leverage External Tools

• Music, You Tube, Podcasts: Find resources and motivation from music, You Tube and podcasts that inform, inspire and energize you.

• Energizing playlists or motivational speakers can uplift your mood and focus.

• Use Apps or Tools:  Apps like Todoist or Habitica gamify progress and keep you on track.

• Inspirational Content:  Read books, watch videos, or follow social media accounts that motivate you.


9. Take Care of Your Health

• Exercise Regularly: Physical activity boosts energy and mood, which enhances motivation.

• Prioritize Sleep:  Lack of rest can sap your focus and enthusiasm.

• Eat Well:  Maintain a balanced diet to fuel your body and mind.


10. Stay Flexible

• Adjust Goals as Needed: 

• Life changes; your goals may need to as well. Reevaluate and refine them if necessary.

• Learn from Setbacks: We learn far more from our failures and setbacks than we do from victories and successes.

• View failures as lessons and use them to improve your approach.
